Research Rotation

Research Rotation

During the first year of study, students will rotate between three laboratories.  The purpose is to give the student time to determine a potential Research Advisor and research topic and interest areas.  Students are required to complete three ten-week lab rotations.  During the final lab rotation, students may return to one of the former rotation labs.  All students will decide on a lab for the Ph.D. studies at the conclusion of the first year of study.

Research rotations require a high level of professionalism; each rotation serves as a job interview.  The faculty overseeing the lab, the Faculty Mentor, will be asked to complete a written evaluation of the student’s rotation performance.  The evaluation is available to the student’s supervisory and comprehensive exam committees as well as all faculty within the Biological Design Ph.D. Program.  The student will also be asked for an evaluation of the Faculty Mentor.  The evaluations will be used in determination of the final pass/fail grade in the course.

Lab rotation requirement may be modified for first year students supporting with RA/TA award. Students will meet with the Graduate Advisor for more information.

Student should view the Research Rotation Expectations for helpful information.
