Bio

Dr. Aditi Chattopadhyay is a Regents’ Professor and Ira A. Fulton Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Engergy and Director of the Adaptive, Intelligent Materials and Systems Center (AIMS) at Arizona State University (ASU). She has held a resident Research Scientist position at the NASA Langley Research Center and summer faculty positions at the NASA Ames Research Center. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.

Her research focuses on smart materials and adaptive structures, structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage prognosis, multiscale analysis, mechanics of composites and multidisciplinary design optimization. She has published 125 archival journal papers and has over 200 other publications (conference papers, book chapters and NASA Technical Memorandum). Her research activities span from fundamental concept development to applied projects with immediate benefits to the industry.

Dr. Chattopadhyay has served as the Associate Editor of AIAA JournalInverse Problems in Engineering, and Engineering Optimization and is currently serving as the Associate Editor of the Computer Modeling in Engineering & Science, Journal of the American Helicopter Society, and Journal of Structural Durability and Health Monitoring. She is the recipient of several academic, research and best paper awards. She was inducted into the Georgia Institute of Technology Hall of Fame and received the Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award in 1995. She is also the recipient of the Faculty Achievement Award – Excellence in Research, 2000, Arizona State University. She has been the Principal Investigator of numerous grants and collaborated with defense and government labs on significant transitions.

Some of her key current research activities include PI of an AFOSR MURI on SHM and damage prognosis of aerospace structures, PI/co-PI of two NASA grants on Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM), and PI of an ARO supported grant on SHM and residual life estimation of woven composites using FBG sensors. Professor Chattopadhyay has a long history of research collaboration with the NASA Laboratories and her research has led to NASA Tech Brief Awards in 2005 and 2006. Prof. Chattopadhyay is active in various professional organizations. She is a Fellow of ASME and a Fellow of the AIAA.
