Biological design graduate program

Understanding the fundamental chemistry of matter and energy to develop new and useful products.

Harness biology to design solutions for urgent real-world challenges

The biological design program at ASU offers master’s and doctoral degrees, and immerses students in core disciplines related to biomedicine and biotechnology.

The program is a collaborative effort by the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Biodesign Institute. Thus, students have the opportunity to work with faculty across multiple disciplines, take classes in a variety of topics, and interact with students from related degree programs.

Who’s the program for?

The program is open to students with diverse academic backgrounds. Whether you have a degree in biology or engineering fields such as chemical engineering, the program uses a transdisciplinary approach to equip you with the skills and research experience necessary for careers in biotechnology.

What careers do students pursue?

Most of our students get jobs or start businesses in biopharmaceutical processing, biomanufacturing, sustainable biotechnology and agribusiness industries.

Research

Societal needs drive the research at the ASU biological design program, both at the master’s and doctoral levels.

Each student gets access to mentorship from more than 90 faculty members with deep expertise in biological design and various other fields, such as sustainability.

Areas of research include:

  • Faster, more accurate detection and diagnosis of disease
  • Personalized treatments that reduce side-effects
  • Sustainable energy sources
